Watermen are chomping at the bit, ready to get a start on the crab season in the Chesapeake Bay. As the crabs are emerging from their winter mud respite, preliminary surveys of the area shows favorable signs for the upcoming season. Although, over the past ten years the blue crab population has dwindled new government regulations are seemingly working to safeguard the female crab population. Some watermen are claiming this new regulation is a double-edged sword as they claim that the regulations are deterring a new generation of watermen from taking the plunge. While the crab population is still not capable of meeting the demands of Delmarva visitors, crabs are currently being supplemented by North Carolina, Louisiana, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Texas. Currently many local watermen are heading to Virginia where the season starts earlier to get a head start. Watermen are hoping that blue crab bushel limits will be raised after the results from the winter dredge survey is released. Regardless, this summer thousands of people will make the trip to the shoreline to dine on a Chesapeake blue crab feast.

Bethany Beach Delaware offers a great fishing experience. On the shore, anglers can reel in all types of fish including bluefish, shark, trout, spot, whiting and stripers. The Indian River Inlet, part of the Delaware State Park, just a few miles north of Bethany Beach, is a popular fishing destination for many. Other popular fishing destinations are only miles away in Fenwick Island, Delaware and Ocean City Maryland.

Fishing on the beach in Bethany does not require a permit. During the summer season, fishing is permitted while the lifeguards are off duty (generally before 10:00am and after 5:30pm). To fish in non-tidal waters, such as lakes and streams, a fishing permit is required. Permits are issued by the Delaware Division of Fish and Wildlife.
